Product Description

Children Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens illustrated by Arthur Rackham 1906

I think that quite the most touching sight in the Gardens is the two tombstones of Walter Stephens Matthews and Phoebe Phelps

Antique Gravure process after a watercolor by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) to illustrate J.M.Barrie's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

Printed by Hodder and Stoughton, London 1906.

"...you may perish in the cold and dark before Peter Pan comes around. He has been too later several times, and when he sees he is too late he runs back to the Thrush's Nest for his paddle...and he digs a grave for the child and erects a tombstone, and carves the poorlttle thing's initials on it."

Arthur Rackham: Dubbed "The Beloved Enchanter", he was arguably the most successful artist in this, the Golden Age of children's story illustrators. With the emergence of a growing middle, or merchant, class came time and money to indulge their children with such fantasy. To his friends he is remembered as gentle, loving and generous man.

Condition= Good. Presented on original heavy green paper as issued. Two small creases in bottom left corner.

Image size= 12.5 x 17.6cm (5 x 7 inch)
