Classical Geography

Classical Studies focus on the architecture, culture, people and philosophy of the Greek and Roman civilisations until the 7th century AD. It has proved a fascination for the inhabitants of the proceeding centuries. An example is Christopher Brown, map maker and print seller from 1688-1712. He studied the learned men of the Classical Era as a source for these remarkable maps. Indeed the title continues "...Wherein the chief Places mentioned in Homer, Viril, Ovid, Lucan, Eutropius, Cornelius Nespos, Fustin, Quintus Curtius, Salluft, Livy, Caesar,Plutarch, Xenophon, Herodotus ..." The manuscripts of such men were the windows to the previous centuries where literacy was only accessible to a noble-class minority. This may well have been a "Passion Project" funded by his success as a engraver, printer and businessman in an Age of Enlightenment.
